The collaboration gives a new life to carefully curated second hand books, chosen by Lucy Kumara Moore (Director of Claire de Rouen) and re-covered by hand using offcuts sourced from our previous collections as part of Ssōne's zero waste initiative.
The prophet, Al Mustafa, has lived in the city of Orphalese for 12 years and is about to board a ship which will carry him home. He is stopped by a group of people, with whom he discusses topics such as life and the human condition. The book is divided into chapters dealing with love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, houses, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death.
"My bookshop Claire de Rouen focuses on publications that explore the interplay of art, fashion and commerce. But the books I’ve gathered for this special collaboration are a little different! Firstly, they are all second hand. For a long time, I’ve wanted to offer pre-owned books at Claire de Rouen as part of a commitment to the environment and sustainability. I knew that working with Ssōne would be a good moment to begin: Caroline Smithson has created a beautiful cover for each book using fabric offcuts from her clothes, onto which I’ve handwritten the book’s title. Each book is now completely unique and feels very precious.
